Safari Route

Nairobi → Masai Mara → Lake Nakuru → Lake Baringo → Lake Bogoria → Nairobi

The route includes three nights in the Masai Mara because it remains the main wildlife destination. Afterward, the safari moves north through three very different Rift Valley lakes, combining rhino habitat, freshwater birdlife and geothermal landscapes without adding unnecessary backtracking.

Why Choose This 6 Day Safari?

Many budget Kenya safaris combine the Masai Mara with one additional national park. This itinerary goes further by combining three complete Mara safari days with Lake Nakuru, Lake Baringo and Lake Bogoria.

As a result, the experience changes noticeably after the Mara. Lake Nakuru focuses on rhinos and wildlife, Baringo adds a freshwater boat safari and extensive birdlife, and Bogoria offers hot springs, dramatic Rift Valley scenery, and seasonal flamingo concentrations. Sharing the safari vehicle keeps the overall price significantly below a private tour.

Wildlife & Rift Valley Experience

The Masai Mara offers opportunities to see lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, cheetahs, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas and other plains wildlife. Migration herds may enter the Mara at certain times of the year, although their exact location and river crossings depend on natural conditions.

Lake Nakuru provides a different wildlife environment and is especially important for black and white rhinos. Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes, waterbucks, zebras and numerous bird species also occur within the park.

Lake Baringo is a freshwater lake known for birdlife, hippos and crocodiles, while Lake Bogoria is an alkaline lake famous for geothermal activity and seasonal flamingo gatherings. Flamingo numbers vary naturally, so large concentrations cannot be guaranteed.

Accommodation

The standard package uses practical budget accommodation rather than mid-range or luxury lodges.

Masai Mara – Miti Mingi Eco Camp or Similar

Spend three nights at Miti Mingi Eco Camp or a comparable permanent budget tented camp near the Masai Mara. The tents provide proper beds and essential facilities, so this is different from pitching your own small tent on the ground.

Lake Nakuru – Buraha Zenoni Hotel & Resort or Similar

Spend one night at Buraha Zenoni or a comparable budget hotel in the Nakuru area. Staying outside the national park helps keep the package affordable while allowing convenient access for the following morning’s game drive.

Lake Baringo – Robert’s Camp or Similar

Spend one night at Robert’s Camp or comparable value accommodation beside Lake Baringo. The location provides a practical base for the included boat safari and the following morning’s journey to Lake Bogoria.

Tunza Tours will confirm the exact accommodation before payment. If a preferred property is unavailable, the team will explain any meaningful change in standard or price before confirming an alternative.

Transportation

The standard package uses a shared customized safari van with a pop-up roof for road transfers and game drives. The vehicle should carry no more than seven safari guests, helping each traveler access the viewing roof during wildlife drives.

Because this is a group-joining safari, you share the vehicle, guide, and daily schedule with other travelers. Therefore, departure times and game-drive arrangements offer less flexibility than a private safari. Travelers who prefer exclusive vehicle use can request a private safari or 4×4 Land Cruiser upgrade.

Masai Mara Lakes Safari Price

From USD 850 Per Person Sharing

The lowest advertised price applies to selected low-season confirmed group departures using the shared safari van and standard budget accommodation described on this page.

Solo travelers and couples can join an existing departure, so you don’t need to bring a full group. A single-room supplement may apply when a traveler requires private accommodation.

Non-Resident Group-Joining Rates

Travel Period Starting Rate
Green / Low – Apr–May From USD 850 pp
Regular – Jan–Mar & June From USD 900 pp
Peak – Jul–Oct From USD 1,150 pp
Nov–20 Dec From USD 1,100 pp
Christmas & New Year On Request

The July–December increase reflects higher Masai Mara conservation fees and seasonal accommodation costs.

Kenyan Citizen Rates

Travel Period Starting Rate
Green / Low – Apr–May From KES 54,500 pp
Regular – Jan–Mar & June From KES 59,500 pp
Peak – Jul–Oct From KES 69,500 pp
Nov–20 Dec From KES 66,500 pp
Christmas & New Year On Request

Eligible residents receive a separate quotation because resident conservation rates differ from Kenyan citizen rates. Travelers booking citizen or resident pricing should carry valid identification.

What Your Quotation Will Confirm

Before payment, Tunza Tours will confirm the departure date, accommodation, room arrangement, safari vehicle, applicable park fees, Lake Baringo boat safari, meals, and complete package price.

Optional Activities and Upgrades

Masai Mara Hot-Air Balloon Safari

Add a sunrise balloon safari during the Masai Mara stay at additional cost. We recommend booking during high-demand travel periods.

Maasai Cultural Visit

A community visit can be arranged near the Masai Mara at additional cost and according to the group schedule.

Lake Baringo Cultural Experience

Travelers interested in local culture can add a community experience around Lake Baringo, subject to availability and the day’s schedule.

Extended Lake Baringo Boat Safari

The standard package includes a boat safari. However, dedicated birders can request a longer excursion or additional specialist birding time.

Private Safari or 4×4 Land Cruiser Upgrade

Travelers who prefer exclusive vehicle use and more flexible schedules can request a private 4×4 Land Cruiser. Pricing depends on travel dates and group size.

Accommodation Upgrade

Mid-range lodge or tented-camp accommodation can be quoted separately while keeping the same route.

Best Time to Travel

The safari operates throughout the year. January to March generally offers warm, relatively dry safari conditions, while April and May bring greener landscapes, fewer visitors, and the lowest starting rates.

July to October is the busiest period in the Masai Mara and overlaps with the broader Great Migration season. However, wildlife movements remain natural, while accommodation demand and Mara fees rise during this period.

Lake Baringo is rewarding for birdlife throughout much of the year. Meanwhile, flamingo numbers at Lake Bogoria can change with water levels, food conditions, and seasonal movement, so the safari cannot guarantee a specific concentration.

Good to Know Before Booking

This is a group-joining budget safari, so you share the safari vehicle and daily schedule with other travelers. As a result, departure times, comfort stops and game-drive arrangements provide less flexibility than a private safari.

The accommodation is value-focused. In the Masai Mara, camping normally means a permanent safari tent with a bed rather than guests pitching their own small tent. Nakuru and Lake Baringo use simple budget accommodation appropriate to the price level.

The safari also has a stronger birding and nature component than a standard Big Five circuit. Therefore, it works particularly well for travelers who want a combination of wildlife, lakes, birdlife and Rift Valley landscapes.

Booking and Payment

To check availability, provide your preferred travel date, number of adults, children’s ages, nationality or residency category, and room requirements. Tunza Tours will confirm the group departure, accommodation, conservation fees, and complete safari price before payment.

The USD 850 starting rate applies to selected low-season confirmed group departures. Solo travelers and couples can join when seats are available, while child rates depend on age, accommodation arrangements and the relevant conservation-fee category.

After receiving the required deposit, Tunza Tours will provide written confirmation showing the accommodation, pickup information, payment schedule and balance due date.

Cancellation and Changes

Cancellation and amendment conditions depend on travel dates, confirmed accommodation, and supplier policies. Peak and festive departures may carry stricter payment or cancellation requirements.

Tunza Tours will provide the applicable conditions before payment. Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Tour Plan

Day 1 Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve

Approximate Distance: 270–290 km
Estimated Driving Time: 5.5–6.5 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Miti Mingi Eco Camp or similar

Your safari begins with an early morning departure from the confirmed Nairobi pickup or meeting point. Meet your driver-guide and fellow travelers before driving through the Great Rift Valley towards Narok and the Masai Mara, with a brief viewpoint stop where timing allows.

You should arrive around lunchtime or early afternoon, depending on traffic and road conditions. After check-in and lunch, enter the reserve for your first game drive. Search the open plains for elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes and predators such as lions and cheetahs before returning to camp for dinner.

Day 2 Full-Day Game Drive in Masai Mara

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Dinner
Activity: Full-Day Shared Game Drive
Accommodation: Miti Mingi Eco Camp or similar

After breakfast, leave camp with a packed picnic lunch and spend the day exploring the Masai Mara. Your driver-guide will select the route according to recent sightings, animal movements, road conditions and the group's agreed schedule.

The day's safari may cover open plains, river habitats and areas used by predators and large herbivore herds. Depending on the route, you may also visit the Mara River area. Enjoy lunch at an approved picnic location before continuing wildlife viewing through the afternoon and returning to camp for dinner.

Day 3 Second Full-Day Masai Mara Safari

Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Dinner
Activity: Full-Day Shared Game Drive
Accommodation: Miti Mingi Eco Camp or similar

A second complete Mara day gives the group an opportunity to explore areas not covered on Day 2. Depending on previous sightings, the guide may focus on predator territories, river systems, large plains-game herds or other productive wildlife areas.

During the broader migration season, wildebeest and zebra movements may influence the day's route. However, river crossings and specific herd locations cannot be guaranteed. After a picnic lunch inside the reserve, continue the afternoon game drive before returning for your final Mara dinner.

Day 4 Masai Mara to Lake Nakuru

Approximate Distance: 230–260 km
Estimated Driving Time: 5–6 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Buraha Zenoni Hotel & Resort or similar

After breakfast, check out and begin the journey towards Nakuru. The standard package does not include another Masai Mara game drive on Day 4 because the safari already includes three standard Mara entry days.

Instead, travel through the Great Rift Valley with suitable comfort and meal stops along the route. Arrive in Nakuru during the afternoon, check in and relax before dinner. The main Lake Nakuru wildlife experience takes place the following morning.

Day 5 Lake Nakuru Game Drive – Lake Baringo Boat Safari

Approximate Distance to Lake Baringo: 120–140 km
Estimated Driving Time: Approximately 2.5–3 hours after Lake Nakuru
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Robert's Camp or similar

After an early breakfast, enter Lake Nakuru National Park for a morning game drive. Explore the lakeshore, grassland and woodland habitats while looking for black and white rhinos, Rothschild's giraffes, buffaloes, waterbucks, zebras and varied birdlife.

Afterward, leave the park and continue north towards Lake Baringo. Once you arrive, take an included boat safari across the freshwater lake to look for hippos, crocodiles and some of the area's many bird species. Later, transfer to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 6 Lake Baringo to Lake Bogoria – Nairobi

Approximate Driving Time to Bogoria: 45–60 minutes
Estimated Driving Time Bogoria to Nairobi: Approximately 4–5 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

After breakfast, leave Lake Baringo and make the short journey to Lake Bogoria National Reserve. Explore the reserve's volcanic landscape, hot springs and geothermal features while looking for flamingos and other birdlife along the lake.

The hot springs reach dangerous temperatures, so always follow your guide's instructions and remain on safe viewing areas. After the visit, begin the journey back to Nairobi with a suitable lunch stop along the route. Arrival is normally expected during the late afternoon or early evening.
