Safari Route

Nairobi → Masai Mara National Reserve → Lake Nakuru National Park → Lake Bogoria National Reserve → Lake Baringo → Nairobi

Why This Safari Route Works

This itinerary combines Kenya’s leading wildlife reserve with three contrasting Great Rift Valley lakes.

The journey begins in the Masai Mara, allowing guests to experience the principal wildlife destination at the start of the safari. It then moves north through Lake Nakuru, Lake Bogoria, and Lake Baringo before returning directly to Nairobi. Lake Nakuru provides a practical transition between the Mara and the more remote northern lakes. Meanwhile, Lake Bogoria and Lake Baringo are close enough to combine into a single travel day while offering very different landscapes and activities.

Two nights at Lake Baringo prevent the destination from becoming a rushed roadside stop. Guests have enough time for a private boat safari, birdwatching, and relaxation before the return to Nairobi. The itinerary can also run in reverse for travelers who prefer to end in the Masai Mara. However, reversing the route does not significantly reduce the total road distance.

Your Private Luxury Safari Experience

This package operates as a private safari. Your traveling party receives exclusive use of the 4×4 Land Cruiser and the services of a dedicated driver-guide.

Private travel provides greater flexibility with departure times, comfort stops, photography, picnic arrangements, and daily game-drive duration. Your guide can adjust the program according to recent sightings, weather, and your interests—the safari suits couples, honeymooners, families, photographers, birdwatchers, and small private groups. Special arrangements can also be made for anniversaries, birthdays, and other celebrations. Park operating hours, road conditions, lodge meal times, and local safety requirements will still influence the daily schedule.

Luxury Accommodation Options

Accommodation is confirmed at the time of booking and depends on your travel dates, room requirements, preferred package level, and availability.

Masai Mara Accommodation

Mara Serena Safari Lodge offers an established safari lodge experience with expansive views and convenient access to reserve game drives.

Sarova Mara Game Camp combines permanent luxury tents, landscaped grounds, and full-service leisure facilities.

Neptune Mara Rianta Luxury Camp provides an intimate tented experience in the wider Mara region.

A comparable luxury camp or lodge may be proposed when the preferred property is unavailable.

Lake Nakuru Accommodation

The Cliff offers a boutique luxury tented experience overlooking the wider Lake Nakuru landscape.

Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge provides a full-service safari-lodge experience within Lake Nakuru National Park.

Mbweha Camp offers a smaller, more intimate tented experience within the wider Nakuru conservation region.

Lake Baringo Accommodation

Lake Baringo has fewer conventional luxury properties than the Masai Mara or Lake Nakuru. The selected accommodation will therefore reflect the best current combination of comfort, location, service, and operating condition.

Possible options include:

  • Island Camp Baringo
  • Soi Safari Lodge
  • Sandai Resort
  • Another inspected premium property

The proposed accommodation will appear in your personalized quotation. Tunza Tours will notify you before confirming any significant property substitution.

Safari Price

Starting From USD 2,350 Per Person Sharing

The advertised amount is an indicative low-season rate based on two adults sharing.

It includes private 4×4 Land Cruiser transport, selected luxury or premium accommodation, full-board meals, scheduled safari activities and the applicable services listed in your confirmed quotation.

Your final price will depend on:

  • Travel dates and safari season
  • Number of adults and children
  • Room occupancy
  • Selected accommodation
  • Lodge and camp availability
  • Exact property locations
  • Current park and reserve fees
  • Lake Baringo boat arrangements
  • Premium room or suite upgrades
  • Optional experiences
  • Airport transfers or Nairobi accommodation
  • Fly-in or charter arrangements
  • Festive-season supplements

The final quotation will identify every accommodation property, meal plan, activity, tax, fee, inclusion, and exclusion.

Seasonal Price Guidance

  • Low or green season: From USD 2,350 per person sharing
  • Shoulder season: From approximately USD 2,650 per person sharing
  • Migration and peak season: From approximately USD 3,050 per person sharing
  • Festive periods and premium suites: Personalized quotation

Rates remain subject to confirmation because lodge, park and supplier charges can change.

Luxury Safari Standards

The standard package provides:

  • Private 4×4 Land Cruiser transport
  • Exclusive use of the safari vehicle

  • Selected luxury and premium accommodation
  • Full-board meals during safari stays

  • Flexible private game drives
  • Private Lake Baringo boat experience
  • Safari planning and operations support

Accommodation standards vary by destination. The Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru offer a broader selection of established luxury properties, while Lake Baringo has a smaller premium inventory.

What to Expect

This safari combines private game drives, scenic road journeys, geothermal landscapes, and lake-based activities. Guests should expect early starts on selected days and several road transfers lasting approximately five to six hours. The Masai Mara provides the strongest big-game experience, while Lake Nakuru adds dedicated rhino-viewing opportunities. Lake Bogoria is primarily a geothermal, landscape, and birdwatching destination, whereas Lake Baringo offers relaxation and private boat exploration.

The private vehicle allows comfort stops and reasonable schedule adjustments where operationally possible. However, game drives, reserve access, and lodge arrival times must still comply with local regulations and operating hours. Wildlife moves freely in natural environments. Sightings of the Big Five, specific predators, rhinos, flamingo concentrations, migration herds, or river crossings cannot be guaranteed. Weather, wind, and lake conditions may also affect boating and outdoor activities.

Best Time to Take This Safari

This safari can operate year-round, although wildlife, birdlife, weather, and accommodation prices vary by season.

July to October

These months are popular for dry-season game viewing. Migration herds may be present within the wider Masai Mara ecosystem, although their exact location and river-crossing activity cannot be guaranteed. Demand for luxury accommodation is high during this period. Therefore, early booking is strongly recommended.

January to March

These months are generally warm and relatively dry. Wildlife viewing can be rewarding, while clearer conditions may provide good photography opportunities.

April to June

The green season brings dramatic scenery, fewer visitors, and possible seasonal accommodation offers. However, rain may affect roads, game drives, and outdoor activities.

November to December

The short rains refresh the landscapes and can create attractive photography conditions. Minor schedule changes may be necessary when rainfall affects road or lake conditions.

Lake Bogoria Flamingo Note

Flamingos move between Rift Valley lakes according to water chemistry and food availability. Their presence and numbers at Lake Bogoria cannot be guaranteed.

Lake Baringo Boat Note

Boat trips depend on water levels, wind, weather, and local safety conditions. The boat guide may adjust the route or departure time when necessary.

Approximate distance: 270–290 km
Estimated driving time: 5–6 hours
Meals: Lunch and dinner

Travel through the dramatic scenery of the Great Rift Valley, passing escarpments, farmland, rural communities and the town of Narok. Your guide will arrange suitable comfort and photography stops along the route.

Depending on traffic, road conditions and lodge location, arrive around lunchtime or during the early afternoon. Check in, enjoy lunch and relax before setting out on your first private game drive. The Masai Mara’s open grasslands provide opportunities to see lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, cheetahs, hyenas and numerous antelope species. Your guide will select productive viewing areas according to recent sightings and the available game-drive time.

Return to your lodge or camp before nightfall for dinner and a relaxing evening.

Possible accommodation: Mara Serena Safari Lodge, Sarova Mara Game Camp, Neptune Mara Rianta Luxury Camp or a comparable luxury property.

Day 2 Full-Day Luxury Masai Mara Safari

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Activities: Full-day private game drive
Accommodation: Luxury lodge or tented camp in the Masai Mara region

After breakfast, depart for a full day of private wildlife viewing in Masai Mara National Reserve. Your dedicated driver-guide will plan the route around recent sightings, weather, wildlife movements and your photography interests.

Search for lions resting in the grass, elephants crossing the plains, giraffes feeding near acacia trees and cheetahs scanning the open landscape. Leopards, buffaloes, hyenas, zebras, wildebeests and many smaller species may also be encountered. Depending on the selected route, continue towards the Mara River, where hippos and crocodiles are often present. During the migration season, large wildebeest and zebra herds may enter the wider Mara ecosystem, although rainfall, grazing conditions and herd behaviour determine their exact location.

Enjoy a picnic lunch at an approved scenic location before continuing with the afternoon game drive. Return to your accommodation before nightfall for dinner and another evening of comfort.

Optional Masai Mara Experiences

The following experiences may be arranged at an additional cost:

  • Sunrise hot-air balloon safari
  • Bush breakfast following the balloon flight
  • Private bush breakfast
  • Bush dinner or sundowner
  • Respectful Maasai cultural visit
  • Specialist photography guide
  • Private conservancy experience
  • Spa treatment at selected properties

Book premium experiences in advance, particularly during the migration and festive seasons.

Possible accommodation: Mara Serena Safari Lodge, Sarova Mara Game Camp, Neptune Mara Rianta Luxury Camp or a comparable luxury property.

Day 3 Masai Mara to Lake Nakuru National Park

Approximate distance: 230–260 km
Estimated driving time: 5–6 hours
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Luxury lodge or boutique tented camp in the Lake Nakuru region

Enjoy breakfast before checking out from your Masai Mara accommodation. Depending on the lodge location and departure arrangements, you may enjoy wildlife sightings while leaving the Mara region. Travel northeast through the Great Rift Valley towards Lake Nakuru National Park. Your private guide will arrange suitable comfort, refreshment and photography stops during the journey.

Arrive around lunchtime or during the early afternoon, check in and enjoy lunch before entering the park for a private afternoon game drive. Lake Nakuru provides excellent opportunities to search for black and white rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, waterbucks and baboons. Lions and leopards also occur within the park, although sightings depend on wildlife movements and conditions during your visit.

The lakeshore, woodland, grassland and rocky viewpoints support diverse birdlife and attractive landscape photography. Flamingos may be present depending on lake levels, food availability and seasonal conditions. Return to your accommodation before nightfall for dinner.

Possible accommodation: The Cliff, Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge, Mbweha Camp or a comparable luxury property.

Day 4 Lake Nakuru to Lake Bogoria and Lake Baringo

Approximate distance from Nakuru to Lake Bogoria: 85–110 km
Estimated driving time: 2–3 hours
Approximate distance from Bogoria to Baringo: 50–60 km
Estimated driving time: 1–1.5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Accommodation: Best-available premium or barefoot-luxury property near Lake Baringo

After breakfast, check out and travel north through the Great Rift Valley towards Lake Bogoria National Reserve. The scenery gradually changes from the more developed Nakuru region to increasingly remote volcanic and semi-arid landscapes. On arrival, explore the reserve with your professional guide. Lake Bogoria is known for its geothermal areas, steaming hot springs, dramatic escarpment scenery and seasonal concentrations of flamingos and other birdlife.

Remain on approved paths and follow every instruction from your guide. The geothermal water and surrounding ground can be extremely hot, so guests must not touch the springs or approach restricted areas.

Enjoy lunch according to the confirmed programme before continuing to Lake Baringo. Although the lakes are relatively close, they offer contrasting environments: Lake Bogoria is a saline lake dominated by geothermal activity, while Lake Baringo provides freshwater scenery, islands and extensive birdlife. Check in at your selected accommodation and spend the remainder of the afternoon enjoying the lakeside environment. Dinner will be served at the lodge, camp or resort.

Possible accommodation: Island Camp Baringo, Soi Safari Lodge, Sandai Resort or another best-available premium property confirmed during booking.

Day 5 Lake Baringo Boat Safari

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Activities: Private boat excursion and leisure time
Accommodation: Best-available premium or barefoot-luxury property near Lake Baringo

Wake up to the peaceful scenery of Lake Baringo and enjoy breakfast before preparing for a private boat excursion. An experienced local boat guide will select a suitable route according to weather, water levels and wildlife activity. Depending on the route, you may see African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, cormorants, pelicans and many other bird species. Hippos and crocodiles may also be present, so remain seated, wear the provided safety equipment and follow every instruction from the crew. The excursion may pass islands, fishing areas and scenic sections of the lakeshore. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed because the route and animal locations vary with natural conditions.

Return to your accommodation for lunch and enjoy a relaxed afternoon. You may unwind at the property, enjoy informal birdwatching or book an optional cultural or photographic experience.

Optional Lake Baringo Experiences

Available experiences may include:

  • Specialist birdwatching excursion
  • Respectful community and cultural visit
  • Additional private boat trip
  • Photography excursion
  • Lakeside sundowner
  • Private dinner
  • Guided nature walk where safe and permitted
  • Additional night at Lake Baringo

Cultural experiences should be coordinated through recognised local hosts and conducted respectfully.

Possible accommodation: Island Camp Baringo, Soi Safari Lodge, Sandai Resort or another confirmed premium property.

Day 6 Lake Baringo to Nairobi

Approximate distance: 270–290 km
Estimated driving time: 5–6 hours
Meals: Breakfast

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast while taking in your final views of Lake Baringo. After checking out, begin the private journey back to Nairobi through the Great Rift Valley. Your driver-guide will arrange suitable comfort and refreshment stops along the route. Lunch may be purchased during the journey unless it appears in your confirmed package.

Arrive in Nairobi during the afternoon or early evening and receive private drop-off at your hotel, residence or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Schedule international departures for late evening. Alternatively, add another night in Nairobi to allow sufficient time for traffic or unexpected road delays.

Your 6-day luxury Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Bogoria and Baringo safari ends with memorable wildlife encounters, rhino-viewing opportunities, geothermal scenery, Rift Valley birdlife and a private lake excursion.
